In 1990 and 1991 I worked with the poet Harm Schepers on the poetry collection ‘Tekens van Leven’ (signs of life). I knew Harm from the period that we lived in Groningen. He was a teacher at the Dutch Praedinius Gymnasium (grammar School) and a colleague of Deborah’s, who taught English at the same school. Often, when I had sent him a personally designed birth announcement or New Year’s card, we received a poem from Harm, inspired by the image, in return. These poems were so wonderful and surprising that I suggested to Harm to work together on a collection of both paintings and poems. This collection was published in 1991.
